Linux

16/04/2026

Linux is an open-source operating system kernel that powers a wide range of operating systems (distributions). In cryptocurrency mining, Linux-based systems are the dominant choice for running mining rigs and managing ASIC hardware.

Why Linux is preferred for mining

  • Lightweight — Linux uses minimal RAM and CPU resources compared to Windows, leaving more for mining
  • Stable — Linux systems can run for months without rebooting, which is critical for 24/7 mining operations
  • Remote management — SSH (Secure Shell) allows full remote control of rigs without a monitor or keyboard
  • No licensing cost — Linux is free, unlike Windows, reducing setup costs for large farms
  • Mining-first tools — most advanced overclocking and monitoring tools are Linux-native

Mining-specific Linux distributions

Distro Notes
HiveOS Most popular GPU mining OS; web dashboard, OC profiles, built-in miners
RaveOS Alternative to HiveOS; similar feature set
minerstat Professional mining management with multi-rig support

These distros come pre-configured with popular miners, pool connection templates, and remote management interfaces.

ASICs and Linux

Most ASIC miners run embedded Linux internally. Custom firmware for ASICs (such as BraiinsOS for Antminers) is also Linux-based, enabling features like autotuning and advanced monitoring.
