Ethereum Classic (ETC)

16/04/2026

Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the original Ethereum blockchain that continued without modification after a controversial hard fork in 2016. When the Ethereum community chose to reverse the DAO hack with a fork, a minority rejected the rollback on principle ("code is law") and kept the original chain — which became Ethereum Classic.

Key facts

  • Algorithm: EtcHash
  • Consensus: Proof of Work
  • Mining hardware: GPU
  • Block time: ~13 seconds
  • Max supply: ~210 million ETC

ETC vs ETH

Ethereum Classic (ETC) Ethereum (ETH)
Consensus Proof of Work Proof of Stake
Mineable Yes No
Smart contracts Yes (EVM compatible) Yes
Origin Original chain (2015) Forked chain (2016)

Post-Merge relevance

After Ethereum switched to Proof of Stake in 2022, a significant portion of former ETH GPU miners moved to ETC as the most direct alternative. ETC's hashrate surged following The Merge.
